Hit By Several Challenges but Determined to Finish College
In the Philippines, it is common for the eldest sibling to take on the role of a parent when their parents pass away due to cultural and familial values deeply rooted in Filipino tradition.
Despite losing both parents and being entrusted with the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings, Remington Salaya from President Roxas, Capiz, remained determined to finish college.
After their mother passed away, the siblings were left under the care of their father, who worked for Capiz Sugar Central.
Fortunately, Remington secured multiple scholarships, including one from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and another from a local non-government organization, which enabled him to pursue his education.
Tragedy struck again when their father passed away from a stroke five months after Super Typhoon Yolanda devastated their area. At the time, Remington was in his fourth year studying Chemical Engineering at Central Philippine University in Iloilo.
Overwhelmed by the loss, he briefly considered dropping out to care for his siblings. However, he realized that quitting would not lead to a better future.

Remington Graduates Cum Laude and Tops Board
Determined to succeed, Remington graduated cum laude and later topped the May 2015 Chemical Engineer Licensure Examination. His family’s struggles and sacrifices served as his driving force to overcome challenges.
Even during high school, Remington was accustomed to studying without electricity or an allowance.
While preparing for the board exams, he stayed rent-free at an uncle’s apartment, to whom he expressed immense gratitude. Confident in his efforts, he had a strong feeling he would emerge as a topnotcher—and he was right.

For his achievement, Remington received PHP85,000 in incentives from his university, review center, and other scholarship sponsors. He credits his success to active listening during class discussions and taking meaningful notes.
Today, a visit to Remington’s Facebook profile reveals that he is happily married and now resides in Alberta, Canada.
